Kappa which goes out
to Yonago City

゚Yonago-city,Tottori゚

Such a rumor spreads in Yonago City in old times, Kappa which pats hips every night when somebody enters the lavatory at night goes out.

One evening a warrior (samurai) who boasts his art of sword goes in a lavotory with his sword in hand, saying,

"I will root out that monster."

As soon as he bends his knees across the toilet, a hairy hand goes out from the bottom of toilet trying to pat his hips.

(Until just after World War Two Japanese lavatorys in a rural area were in bailed out system, we could not see the bottom of the toilet which was pitch-dark.)

In the voice of "Yah.", he grips the strange arm with his whole might and cuts it out by sword.

When he returns his residence, he intrigues to look at monster's arm shrewdly.
At that time a monster suddenly appears at his presence.

"I am asking for your favour. Please return my arm."

"No, I won't. "

"Although it might be unusual for you, I will die soon if there is not my right arm."

"Do not die of the arm."

"No, unless I join it to my body just before noon, my life will have gone."

Kappa says in a mysterious way,

"The arm will recover as before if it is matched within 12 hours."

After all, Kappa promises never to do badness and gets it returned.

In a great joy it shows suddenly to match the arm to the cut part of shoulder.
It lifts a heavy pickles stone on the side easily to the recovering evidence.

It says,

"Let me give you reward, I will present you with scroll in which not only medicene to cure every thing, but also bonesetting method are written."

and it has gone.

Kappa stops wandering about near Yonago, it comes to Kurosaka.
This place is talked about greatly in Hearn's ghost stories(Kwaidan).

Kappa starts to infest near Kappa-buchi, the upstream in the river of Hino.
Plobably playing many tricks might be done by this fellow.

It is said that a horse which comes to drink water is dragged into the river.

(Koma-hiki in Japanese.)

Ambling horses are also in making water drink at the river side.
A liver is pulled out from hips of the child who has swum alone.

(In Susie's hometown, Shodoshima island, we call Kappa Gataro.
A child who has pulled out the liver will not revive any longer.)

Kappa is pleased to play tricks again at Kurosaka.

One day, a priest of Komyoji temple from Kurosaka comes to write strange characters on a rock along the river.
Since then Kappa never appears again.

Suzi's Comment

This story was heard from Mr. Sadao Sumi@(association chairman of the Tottori folk tale, 81 years old, and newspaper journalist OB)

Suzi actually admires both his wonderful memory and his light footwork which cannot be thought to have exceeded 80 years old.

It is not an exaggeratrion to say that being preserved without ruining folk tales of Tottori is owing to the effort in him.
