Demon of Mt. Senzoku-yama
Mr.Komatu, veterinarian, age 67 in 1996 told me a following story.
He was born and grew up at Mochigase town in Tottori prefecture.
As a youngest child, he heard many ghost stories from his mother, which spreads to Mochigase from olden times.
In Mochigase, there is a mountain named Senzokuyama, above sea level of 736.3m.
Before daybreak, he enjoys to take a stroll by accompaning a dog, looking up at the mountain.
It is the fogged, triangle shape. It looks like a mountain painted in the black and white Chinese art.
At the top of the mountain there is a small shrine about 20-30 persons can get in.
It is said Demon's den.
In old times there lived a millionaire named Torigoe household in Hikita village.
He had a beautiful daughter.
A young man came to her room every night, he left at the dawn.
He made her enjoy by telling her interesting stories.
Soon a rumor spread. A young man came to meet a daughter every night.
Villagers wondered who he was and if her father knew that or not.
Her mother was in astonishment, and she inquired if her daughter identified him or not.
On the next mooning before he left, the dauther following a wise mother's order, sew a hemp yarn along the bottom of her lover's kimono.
It was only way to identify him.
The following morning the mother traced a thread of sewn hemp yarn.
It shined shirply in a string of mountain dews.
It postponed long, she climbed up to the mountain, then at last reached a demon's dwelling.
"Oh my God, my daughter's lover is a demon of Mt.Senzoku. How horrible it is!"
The household of the millionaire was fussed over in great embarrassment.
Lord Yukihira, who had come as Governor of Imba (old name of a part of Tottori prefecture), visited Torigoe household by self introduction.
He noticed that as long as the daughter's opponent was a demon, to root out was not so easy.
He prayed to Ashihara-shikou-God enshrined in Ashio shrine.
The demon was defeated, and ended up to be burnt down at the top of the mountain.
However, the result still came to an embarrasing end even nowadays.
What happened? Can you imagin?
The burnt dust scattered all over the world at the mercy of wind.
Mr. Komatu explained in laughing a little, "Like annoying atomic dusts"
The dust afflicts us in the shape of gnats.
